August 9, 2001. On the airplane as we're about to leave Hong Kong for San Francisco. We had left Guangzhou earlier in the day and taken a bus to Hong Kong. It was about a three-hour ride. There were steady streams of trucks carrying goods from mainland China into Hong Kong for shipping to the rest of the world.
