August 3, 2001. A play area at the Nanchang Orphanage. The orphanage is officially called the Nanchang Social Welfare Institute. It also houses some elderly. This is where Megan lived from birth until she was about four months old. We were told that there are about 500 girls living in this orphanage, ranging in age from newborn to 18 years. Only a small percentage of these girls get adopted. There is also a very small percentage of boys in the orphanages of China, but they are apparently handicapped in some way. All of the children in the orphanages have been abandoned by their birth parents, usually in some public area where they will be found. The government then does a two-month search for the birth parents, and if they are not found, the babies are considered officially abandoned. Megan's abandonment paperwork includes the address of where she was found. It is about an hour's drive north of Nanchang, so we did not have an opportunity to visit the site.
